Thus while the meningococcus is a very fragile organiam and succumbs easily in external nature, in overcrowded and 111- ventilated conditions it passes from one to another readily. The cold temperatures, while detrimental to the meningococcus outside the body, by bringing about a condition of cvercrowding and close contact, favors the general distribution of this micro-organien.

The relative incidence of the disease in crowded and werewded dietriots adde further evidence. As shown above, the

disease took its grestest toll from the crowded districts, Among the Kuropeans the incidence was as 1:1250 among the

* Chiness it was an 1:569. Yet epidemio meningitis is not pecu- liarly a disease of the Chinese. In matow, similarly, about sixty asses developed - all among Chinese, who live under the same (or possibly worse) asuditions as in Jiongkong. On the

Trans-Pacific, or the coast-line steamships numerous asses have occurred in the orowded steerage and but rarely dan a

case occurred mong the cabin passengers. Among the Chinese

thansalves, in the less crowded areas of Kowloon, fewer dasea

pro rata have developed.

On the other hand, at Canton there were no authenticated

oness of epidemio meningitis amongst the Chinese, according to

the medical authorities at the Canton hospital. The crowding

at Canton is of a different nature from that in the Colony.
